How to Safely Delete GarageBand Sound Library & Apple Loops on Mac: Reclaim 30GB+

Mac storage guides
To delete GarageBand audio files and reclaim 25GB–40GB: Go to System Settings > General > Storage, click the "i" info icon next to Music Creation, select the sound libraries, and click Delete. Alternatively, delete the folders /Library/Application Support/GarageBand and /Library/Audio/Apple Loops in Finder.
format_list_bulleted Quick Navigation (Table of Contents)
Every new Mac comes pre-loaded with GarageBand. Even if you never intend to record a podcast or play a virtual piano, macOS silently installs and retains between 15GB to 40GB of factory instruments, synthesizers, drum kits, and Apple Loops.
Worse yet, dragging the GarageBand app from /Applications to the Trash does not delete the sound library. The sound packs remain orphaned in system directories indefinitely, preventing you from learning how to free up space on Mac effectively.
folder_zip 1. Why Is GarageBand Taking Up 30GB+ of Disk Space?
The GarageBand footprint is split across several system-level audio repositories:
- Apple Loops (
/Library/Audio/Apple Loops): Thousands of pre-recorded MIDI beats, guitar riffs, and synth loops (6GB to 15GB). - Instrument Library (
/Library/Application Support/GarageBand): Multi-sampled grand pianos, vintage drum kits, and orchestral sound fonts (10GB to 25GB). - Logic Pro shared assets (
/Library/Application Support/Logic): Shared audio impulse responses and synthesizer presets.
Because these folders live in root system directories rather than user documents, macOS usually bundles them into the vague System Data storage category.
tune 2. Method 1: Delete via macOS Storage Settings (Safest GUI Method)
In macOS Sonoma and macOS 15 Sequoia (see our guide to reduce System Data on macOS Sequoia), Apple includes a built-in manager for music creation assets:
- Click the Apple Logo () > System Settings.
- Navigate to General > Storage.
- Scroll down to the storage categories list and find Music Creation.
- Click the "i" info icon on the right.
- You will see two items: GarageBand Sound Library and Apple Loops. Click Delete next to both.
Note: If you previously deleted the GarageBand app itself, the "Music Creation" row may disappear even though the files are still on disk! In that case, use Method 2 below.
terminal 3. Method 2: Manual Removal via Finder & Terminal (100% Reliable)
To guarantee every single megabyte is reclaimed, you can remove the folders directly from the system root:
- In Finder, press
Cmd + Shift + G. - Navigate to:
/Library/Application Support/and delete the GarageBand folder. - Next, navigate to:
/Library/Audio/and delete the Apple Loops folder.

Deleting GarageBand's sound library is only step one. macOS quietly hoards another 20GB–50GB across hidden developer caches (Xcode DerivedData, Docker images), messaging archives (WhatsApp media), and uninstalled application leftovers.

dns 4. Want to Keep the Sounds? Relocate to an External Drive
If you produce music but need free space on your primary Mac SSD, Apple allows you to move the entire sound library to an external SSD with zero hassle (just as video editors relocate Premiere Pro scratch disks to external storage):
- Connect an external SSD.
- Open GarageBand.
- In the menu bar, go to GarageBand > Sound Library > Relocate Sound Library...
- Select your external drive and click Relocate. GarageBand will transfer the 30GB library and leave a symlink alias.

GarageBand is just one of many apps that quietly cache gigabytes of forgotten data on macOS. Video editors, Docker containers, Xcode DerivedData builds, and WhatsApp media create hidden bloat that standard cleaners ignore.
Dusty for Mac brings full transparency to your storage. It scans hidden developer and creative directories, uses local Gemini AI to explain the exact risk of deleting each folder, and safely moves items to the macOS Trash.
